The Gear

GearDifferent gear is used in different scenarios when fishing Biscayne Bay.

Spinning gear accounts for about 80% of the gear used for most all scenarios while fly fishing gear is utilized mainly for bonefish, permit and tarpon.

Long 7’-7 ½’ medium action spinning rods with 8-12lb class spinning reels will handle most all scenarios in Biscayne Bay.  Larger tackle is in order for larger tarpon such and 7’-7 ½’ 20lb class spinning rods matched with large capacity 20lb class spinning reels will do the trick.

While different anglers prefer different degrees of challenges, the following is a general rule by which to gauge your tackle selection.

Bonefish, mackerel, small to medium snapper/tarpon, jacks:

8lb class spinning gear
8-9wt fly gear

Permit, snook, medium tarpon, larger snappers, sharks, barracudas:

10lb class spinning gear
9-10wt fly gear

Large tarpon, large shark, grouper:

20lb class spinning gear
12wt fly gear
