Fish the Flats on Biscayne Bay

Capt. Mo Estevez

Sight fishing the clear flats of Biscayne Bay for bonefish is one of the most challenging light tackle angling endeavors on the planet since our Miami Biscayne Bay bonefish are difficult to spot on the flats; they are very leery of anglers, noise and can even sense the subtle motion of a cast.

For these and many other reasons, most anglers enter the sport by booking a flats fishing charter with a reputable Miami bonefish guide. A good Miami bonefish guide will have years of experience in fishing for these world class fish, is a good teacher, has the necessary patience to help the angler on the bow and knows how and when to approach a productive flat.

Booking a Biscayne Bay fishing captain who specializes in giant Miami bonefish will surely flatten your learning curve. In Miami’s Biscayne Bay, sight fishing the flats for bonefish takes place in clear shallow flats where at times the water is so shallow that the bonefish and permit’s tail will come out of the water as they feed.

When this occurs, it is referred to as “tailing fish” and is the most exciting and challenging way to fish for bonefish and permit. While poling the flats on a guided Miami bonefish charter, I also encounter permit as well as tarpon (tarpon during the tarpon run), sharks, barracudas plus an assortment of colorful non-game fish. Prime time for fishing the flats for bonefish are spring through fall but flats fishing Miami for bonefish in Miami’s Biscayne Bay is good all year long. In the spring and fall large number of fish can be spotted; but the fall is when we can see the largest number of big Miami bonefish.

Spinning and fly tackle are both used while fishing for bonefish, permit, and tarpo; however,  spinning gear is most popular.  So, whether you are a novice or an expert, if you want to see what Biscayne Bay bonefishing is all about, give me a call or drop me an email and let’s book a bonefish charter.  Once you’re here, we'll get you hooked…forever.
