Miami Flats fishing charters generally takes place is water from 12” to 6’ in depth and goes hand in hand with sight fishing.
Fishing the flats requires good knowledge of the area and the regular movement of fish for it to be a productive endeavor.
Specialized boats and equipment have been developed over the decades in order to make flats fishing more productive and easier on the anglers and guides. Some examples are the flats boat invented by Bob Hewes, the poling tower, trolling motor and the push pole.
When fishing deeper flats for fish such as permit or tarpon, a trolling motor is typically an easier method to employ. However, as the water becomes shallower or for the stealthiest approach possible, a push pole is utilized to propel the flats skiff around the flats. If water shallower that 3’ is not an area where the angler typically fishes and desires a bigger boat, the SUV of boats, the bay boat, has fit the bill for many flats anglers over the last decade. Fishing the flats, regardless whether 12” or 6’, is an exciting and very visual experience which many anglers have discovered and chosen not to return from.
